An example of real time PCR result. Yellow and green lines on graph are showing exponentially increasing fluorescence and have crossed the threshold. These lines represent positive controls. Sample lines did not cross the threshold and are negative.
Molecular Section

The molecular section plays important role in applied diagnostic test developments using modern technology applications. This section maintains testing capabilities necessary for identifying and characterizing highly pathogenic animal diseases, emerging infectious diseases, and foreign animal diseases. Modern instrumentation such as automated nucleic acid extraction platforms (QIAcube and Kingfisher), real time PCR instruments (smart cyclers and ABI 7500 fast), and DNA sequencing platform are utilized in this section.  This section provides the high throughput testing ability needed to respond to animal disease outbreaks.

The services offered include many automated molecular testing methods that are important for rapid identification and characterization of infectious agents. PCR tests for the following diseases are routinely performed in molecular section by the bacteriology and virology section staff: avian influenza, avian paramyxovirus, bovine viral diarrhea (BVD) , canine influenza, classical swine fever (CSF), Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE), equine herpes virus (EHV-1), equine herpes myeloencephalopathy (EHM), feline herpes virus, foot and mouth disease virus (FMDV), influenza type A, Johne's disease, Potamac horse fever (PHF) Streptococcus equi (strangles), swine influenza virus (SIV) and West Nile virus (WNV).
