Since 1979, the Department has contracted with The Rutgers University, Cook College, Food Science Department under the annual Quality Food Audit project to meet the needs of the NJ Food Distribution Program. The general objective for the continuation of the Quality Audit project remains to monitor all aspects of food quality, develop improvements for products distributed in New Jersey and provide technical guidance wherever necessary.

The long-term goal of the Quality Audit program has been to improve the eating quality of distributed foods thru scientific quality analysis studies with emphasis on meeting applicable standards and nutritional guidelines. Other aspects of the Quality Audit include evaluating pre-bid samples and establish specification with food manufacturers for processing with USDA donated commodities under NJ State contracts and evaluating food complaint samples.

The qualified recipients of the program include mainly NJ school districts participating in the School Lunch Program and other eligible needy citizens throughout New Jersey.
