New Jersey Wine Industry
This is really an exciting time in New Jersey’s wine industry. New varieties are being developed that work well in this state. We now know that Pinot Grigio, Viogner, Syrah and much more can grow here. A short time ago, New Jersey wine growers could not have made such a claim.
MANY VARIETIES
One of the most exciting aspects of the industry is the ability to successfully grow many varieties of grapes because of the great conditions. There are more than 40 varieties now growing in the state, from Pinot Noir and Riesling in the North, to some of the more popular Italian varieties such as Sangiovese and Barbera in the South. We have everything from vinifera vines such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, to French American Hybrids to Native American vines. We also have a Spanish winery that has just started planting in Lower Township, Cape May County. They’ll have Spanish varieties including Albernino and Tempernio. In addition, you can find many excellent fruit wines including Apple, Blackberry, Blueberry, Cranberry, Cherry, Plum, Raspberry and Strawberry; as well as blush wines, Ports, Ice wines, Spice wines, Sangria’s and several Sparkling wines.”
WINE STATISTICS
New Jersey is the fifth largest wine producing state in the country. Our wines are winning hundreds of national and international medals as well as the respect of the national industry. New Jersey has 27 wineries in 10 of the state’s 21 counties and that number is growing rapidly. It is expected that by 2006 the state will have around 40 wineries and from the number of inquiries, there will be a steady increase for the next few years.
NEW TRENDS
Many of the new wineries were started by some of New Jersey’s long-time farmers who sought new ways to gain greater profits in agriculture. Part of the new trend has been several fourth and fifth generations of local farmers switching over to the business of growing grapes and making wine.
