On November 2, 2017, a 25 year-old Quarter Horse mare in Warren County NJ was euthanized due to Equine Herpes Myeloencephalopathy -EHM.  The premises was quarantined, biosecurity measures and health monitoring were implemented.
Today, November 24, 2017 the quarantine was lifted since no additional horses have become sick.  There are no other premises in NJ under quarantine for EHM at this time.
The DAH reminds the horse community that EHM, like other diseases affecting horses’ neurological systems such as Rabies, Eastern Equine Encephalitis and West Nile Virus, must be reported to the state veterinarian within 48 hours of a positive diagnosis.
