Secretary Fisher Urges Consumers to Visit Local Supermarkets, Farms Stands, Farmers Markets

(BLOOMFIELD) – New Jersey Department of Agriculture Secretary Douglas H. Fisher today visited a Super Foodtown supermarket in Essex County to highlight the many varieties of produce now available at the height of growing season.

“Jersey Fresh season is in full swing and our farmers are continuing to provide outstanding product to consumers, grown close to where they live and picked at the peak of freshness,” Secretary Fisher said. “The partnership with Foodtown supermarkets plays an important role in helping us deliver outstanding quality fruits and vegetables to consumers.”

Like all of the 19 Foodtown stores throughout New Jersey, the Super Foodtown in Bloomfield features a wide range of Jersey Fresh fruits and vegetables. They include blueberries, peppers, sweet corn, cucumbers, spinach, lettuce, peaches and others.

“We are proud to have a partnership with New Jersey farmers who provide our stores with great fresh fruits and vegetables,” said Victor Savanello, the Senior Director, Produce and Floral for Allegiance Retail Services, LLC. “Our family owned and operated Foodtown stores have for years relied on working with local family farms and food producers. Partnering with Jersey Fresh is a perfect match between us, our customers and area farmers.”

Savanello also noted that consumers are continuing to become more aware of where their food comes from.

“We believe the trend of customers wanting to know where their food is grown, and that they want it from a local source, will continue,” Savanello said. “Along with our customers, we understand the importance of supporting the local economy by sourcing our food from farmers and growers right here in New Jersey.”

The Super Foodtown in Bloomfield opened in November of 2015 and was constructed to blend into a city setting. The store is a comfortable and convenient 26,000 square feet with two entrances, one on Glenwood Avenue and the other from the parking deck.

Along with a produce department that features a large variety of Jersey Fresh items, the supermarket also has hot food, fresh cut meat and sushi departments, a deli and a bakery.

Foodtown is part of Allegiance Retail Services, LLC, a retailer owned co-op that is headquartered in Iselin, N.J. Allegiance has served communities at more than 90 locations in New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania for over 50 years under the name of Foodtown, Inc.
