Promises Made Promises Kept

tan_square "I made a promise to protect the Highlands, home to more than half of the State's drinking water - we did it - leaving it for the enjoyment of generations to come."

Protecting New Jersey's Environment

As promised, the McGreevey Administration stood-up to polluters and said no to the special interests that threatened our open space, clean water and air. One by one we are setting new environmental standards both for the State and the nation.

Making Polluters Pay:

  • Collected more Natural Resource Damage fines in the last two years than the prior administration did in its entire tenure.
  • Won a precedent-setting Clean Air Act ruling against a Midwest coal power plant that emits more pollution than all power plants in New Jersey and Connecticut combined.
  • Led a multi-state suit against the Bush Administration's efforts to weaken the Clean Air Act.

Preserving New Jersey's Open Space

  • Protected more than 76,000 acres of open space and farmland.
  • Preserved 20,000 acres of farmland, in the last year, making New Jersey a national leader in farmland preservation.
  • Led the fight to provide an additional $150 million for open space preservation and more park space.
  • Doubled funding for urban parks and committed to improving and creating an additional 200 parks throughout New Jersey.
  • Created the Highlands Task Force to protect the Highlands.
    • Preserved 50 farms in the Highlands.
    • Protected 17,000 acres of open space in and around the Highlands.
    • Created www.savethehighlands.org to get New Jerseyans involved in protecting the Highlands.

Protecting Our Drinking Water

  • Protected nine reservoirs totaling more than 7,000 acres that provide drinking water for 3.5 million residents.
  • Implemented a new rule that requires developers to maintain a 300-foot buffer, minimizing new development around more than 6,000 miles of streams
  • Required municipalities to develop new rules for developers regarding the management of the stormwater that replenishes our State's groundwater.
  • Proposed protecting an additional 500 miles of ecologically sensitive streams and rivers with the State's highest level of protection.
