Promises Made Promises Kept

tan_square "I made a promise to improve teacher quality, not just by raising standards, but by giving teachers the support they need in the classroom - we did it."

Improving Education, Helping Teachers

As promised, Governor McGreevey made improving education his top priority. Working with parents and teachers, he has improved the programs that work and created innovative ways to address those that do not.

  • Committed more than $8 billion in the last year to direct school aid - more than any previous administration.
  • Improved student test scores. According to the National Assessment of Educational Progress report - The Nation's Report Card - New Jersey's students are scoring significantly above the national average in both reading and math.
  • Building and improving over 1,300 schools to provide students with 21st Century classrooms - the most aggressive school construction program in the nation.
  • Helped nearly 300,000 students become stronger readers through the Governor's Reading Coaches Program and Book Club.
  • Raised GPA and national testing score requirements for teachers.
  • Required teachers to be competent in their core subject areas.
  • Partnered with New Jersey's business community to create career academies in our State's high schools, giving students the skills they need to succeed in the 21st Century.
