Community Programs

The NJ Senior Nutrition Program offers daily (Monday-Friday) noontime meals at community nutrition centers and senior centers throughout the state. Each meal contains the nutritional requirement of 1/3 the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA), and follows the US Dietary Guidelines. Senior citizens age 60 and above are welcome to eat lunch in a group setting and participate in a variety of activities. Nutrition education and counseling are also provided. A donation is requested. There is no means test. Transportation may be provided.

Resources

To locate a nutrition center in your local community, contact your county Area Agency on Aging.

Home Delivered Meals

The NJ Nutrition Program offers home delivered meals (Meals on Wheels) to senior citizens age 60 and above who require meals delivered to their home. An individual may be eligible if they are homebound due to illness, frail condition, isolation, or special need for support. The program assesses each individual’s need and eligibility before a client receives home delivered meals. To request information about home delivered meals and client eligibility, contact your county Area Agency on Aging. A suggested weekly donation is requested.

Farmer's Market Nutrition Education Program

The NJ Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Education Program is for senior citizens (age 60 and above) with limited financial means and provides vouchers to purchase fruits and vegetables in the growing season (Summer & Fall) at New Jersey farmers' markets and farm stands. The produce must be purchased from a participating NJ Department of Agriculture certified farmer. County nutritionists provide nutrition education lessons. A county coordinator, under the sponsorship of NJ WIC Services, NJDHSS, administers the program.

Resources

Contact your local Area Agency on Aging for information on the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Education program in your county or visit the Farmer's Market website to find a location near you.
