(TRENTON) – Acting Governor Richard J. Codey today issued the following statement in response to the indictment of three men charged with plotting to attack financial buildings in Newark, New York and Washington D.C. One of the men is said to be a senior al Qaeda figure.
Codey’s statement is below:
“I want to congratulate and thank everyone who was involved in capturing and indicting these men, accused of actively planning terrorist attacks in Newark, New York and Washington. As we have seen, the threat of global terrorism is very real – but our law enforcement and defense agencies are doing everything they can to protect us.
“The allegation that a prominent al Qaeda leader was planning such a strike in New Jersey, and that one of his partners had the plans of a building in Newark, reemphasizes that New Jersey is a state at high risk of future attacks. New Jersey’s security and America’s security require that our state receive a fair share of funding from the Federal government.
“I have recently had the chance to work closely with U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff and am confident in his analysis of real risks. We in New Jersey will not stop working until we receive the funding our state needs and deserves.”
