Paying Tribute to the Department's Best and Brightest

Governor James E. McGreevey

Governor James E. McGreevey

I always cherish the opportunity to share my thoughts with you, the outstanding law enforcement professionals and administrative personnel of the New Jersey Department of Corrections.

My respect and admiration for the staff of the Department of Corrections has steadily grown since my tenure as governor began. You deserve our highest praise for ensuring the effective operation of our correctional facilities, thus helping to provide for the safety and security of the families and communities of this great state.

Hence, I designated May 5-9 as Correctional Officers Week. Furthermore, I enthusiastically lent my support to the 2003 Officers of the Year Luncheon, held May 9 in Hamilton, an event ably organized and hosted by the Policeman's Benevolent Association Local 105, along with the NJDOC.

Awards were presented to men and women who exemplify the highest standards of professional conduct, who continually demonstrate a willingness to perform above and beyond the call of duty, and whose personal lives and service to the community are extensions of their professional excellence.

On behalf of the citizens of New Jersey, allow me to extend heartfelt congratulations to these award-winning senior correction officers: Michael Tedesco, Roy H. Barlow, Matthew Remely, Vincent Rutherford, Terry Smith, William Morales and Donald Uknuis. Also, John E. Tier, Michael Davis, Jeffrey Mann, Denise Booth, James E. Frazier, Cindy Stephens, Mark Upham, Ronald Tomlin, Jose R. Allende and Marvin Heaton. Sadly, both Officer Allende and Officer Heaton were honored posthumously.

To the recipients, thank you for your courage and commitment. It is through your efforts and those of your colleagues throughout the
