Course Description
The Next STEP is designed for participants who have successfully completed the NJSTEP (NJ Supervisory Training Empowering Performance) program. While the focus of the NJSTEP program centers on providing a framework for participants to develop a fundamental understanding of the skills and competencies needed to be successful in public sector supervision, The Next STEP will allow students to have dialogue about challenges and successes experienced upon implementing previously learned skills, as well as undertake a more comprehensive exploration of these higher level skills and competencies. Participants will learn valuable theories behind best management practices. The Next STEP has been organized around two main topics:
1. Self-Leadership (Day One)
- Personal Development
- Effective Planning and Scheduling
- Improving Management Relationships
- Understanding Your Manager's Motivation
- Communicating with Upper Management
2. Leading Others (Day Two)
- Communicating Effectively
- How to Address Employee Performance
Participants meet over the course of two days and will engage in interactive exercises, insightful discussions and real-world activities designed to deepen their understanding of how teams succeed in a complex, ever-changing public service environment.
