Entry-Level Examinations

The Entry-Level Public Safety Examination Process provides candidates with job opportunities in a wide variety of job titles such as: Police Officer, State and County Correction Officer, Sheriff's Officer, Firefighter, and many other public safety related titles.

Law Enforcement: In order to be considered for employment in an entry-level law enforcement position, candidates must pass a written exam called the Law Enforcement Examination (LEE). Those who pass will remain in the eligible pool for two years. The pool of eligible candidates that result from the LEE will be used to fill positions for law enforcement titles in all Civil Service jurisdictions.  A date for the next announcement of the entry-level law enforcement exam (LEE) has not been determined.  Please check this location periodically for information concerning the next announcement.

Firefighter: All Fire Testing Unit activities fall under the scrutiny of the U.S. Department of Justice. The format used for the entry-level Firefighter Test has been reviewed and approved by the U.S. Justice Department. Candidates must pass a written cognitive examination, situational judgment exercise, and physical performance test in order to be considered for employment in a Civil Service jurisdiction.

Promotional Examinations

The promotional selection process in New Jersey's Civil Service System is designed to provide all applicants with an equal opportunity to compete for a promotional position. The examination serves as one objective tool in this process. Test scores will be used to identify qualified candidates and to generate a list of eligibles to be considered for appointment by each jurisdiction.

Law Enforcement: Promotional examinations for Law Enforcement titles are announced and given according to established schedules for each title group. For many of these promotional announcements, Orientation Guides are also provided. These guides are designed to give specific information regarding the testing process and to help candidates prepare for their upcoming examination. Click here for more information.
