| The inspection section
operates a direct service program dealing with the application and
enforcement of the New Jersey Uniform Fire Code promulgated pursuant
to the Uniform Fire Safety Act.
Our objective is to protect
the public from the ravages of fire by ensuring that occupancies
defined by the Code as Life Hazard uses meet the required minimum
standards of the Code.
In those municipalities
where the governing body has chosen not to create a Local Enforcing
Agency (LEA), the Division of Fire Safety assumes this responsibility.
The inspection section also issues smoke detector certificates,
fire safety permits, fireworks permits, and carnival registrations.
The Inspection section
also enforces the Code in buildings owned by the State or any of
its boards, commissions, agencies or authorities and maintains a
working relationship with local fire officials in communities where
state facilities are located.
The organization of the
Inspection section consists of three inspection teams based upon
geographical considerations. The staff of these three teams conducts
the registration and inspection activities in Life Hazard Uses,
issuing
Notices- of-Violations and Order-to-Correct, and the following up
with
re-inspections to secure abatement of hazards.
In addition, we have
a Compliance section, which follows up on unabated violations, using
the penalty section of the Code and/or Orders of the Commissioner
to secure compliance. This section also receives and processes administrative
appeals on violations and penalties that have been assessed against
building owners. |
