Ask the Green Homes Office

We get a lot of questions about how to build and live a greener lifestyle.  Here are a few of the most common questions we get, and our answers to these questions.

  1. I have been searching for an eco-friendly home and/or an eco-friendly contractor.  Can you recommend someone?
  2. I am building (or renovating) my home. Where can I find out about incentives, grants, loans and other financial options for Green Building?

Q.  I have been searching for an eco-friendly home and/or an eco-friendly contractor.  Can you recommend someone?

A.  The Green Homes Office doesn't recommend specific builders, realtors or developers.  However, we work with a lot of organizations that maintain lists of eco-friendly partners and projects.

NJ BPU Clean Energy Program's - ENERGY STAR Homes
Contact the NJ ENERGY STAR Homes Program for more up-to-date info on home builders that have completed ENERGY STAR Homes.

United States Green Building Council - Leadership in Energy and Environmental Development (LEED)
The USGBC maintains a listing of all LEED for Homes projects currently registered.

National Association of Home Builders - Green Building program
The NAHB is a trade organization that also maintains a green building program. They should be able to point you to green builders and/or developers in your area.

Q.  I am building (or renovating) my home. Where can I find out about incentives, grants, loans and other financial options for Green Building?

A.  The State of New Jersey offers some of the most generous incentives for Green Building in the nation. You'll find links to many of the available programs in our Homeowner's Programs section.  Another great place to look for incentives is the Database of State Incentives for Renewables and Efficiency (DSIRE).  You'll find a link to their site in our Green Links section.
