DCA ANNOUNCES PROPERTY TAX RELIEF |
TRENTON, N.J. – New Jersey Department of Community Affairs (DCA) Commissioner Joseph Doria today announced 2008 Extraordinary Aid awards for calendar year budget municipalities.
“Governor Corzine has emphasized the need to ease the burden property taxes have taken on New Jersey residents,” said Commissioner Doria. “Extraordinary aid helps to ease that burden by providing much needed support for local governments so that they can continue to maintain services essential to their community.
Extraordinary Aid is awarded to municipalities who, because of extreme circumstances, would not be able to provide essential services to the community without a substantial increase in their property tax rate.
To receive Extraordinary Aid, the municipality must have submitted an application to the Division of Local Government Services by March 24 of this year. The application details the municipality’s fiscal posture and includes information about the municipality’s efforts to contain costs and share services. This year’s budget contained $9 million less in extraordinary aid funding than the previous year’s budget.
DCA’s Extraordinary Aid program is implemented through the Division of Local Government Services, which works with local governments throughout the state to ensure their fiscal integrity and to support their efforts to comply with state laws and regulations.
