NRTC grant funding will be used to construct four new two-family homes as part of the Parkview A.P. project and the new Rights of Passage II (for at-risk young women), a companion to a house for at-risk young men funded thru a prior NRTC grant. Proceeds will also be used to construct a two-family home intended for tenants preparing to become homeowners.

Additional activities supported by the NRTC grant include youth mentoring through Big Brothers, Big Sisters; job training and readiness placement via Interfaith Neighbors’ Career Corps and Community Affairs and Resource Center; a two-week fine arts and technology summer camp for 50 students with a creative arts focus;  a junior entrepreneur program, which offers counselling/coaching for middle-school students interested in entrepreneurship; and a summer concert series at a new municipal park in the neighborhood.

Camden Lutheran Housing 

Municipality:
North Camden Neighborhood, Camden 

Award Amount:

Camden Lutheran Housing will address several initiatives using NRTC grant funding. The nonprofit will rehabilitate two vacant residential properties, one for homeownership and the other for rental. NRTC funding will enable at least 10 youth to start or continue college work through the Hopeworks Community Responding in Belief program, allowing participants to complete the Hopeworks technology training program and earn a paid internship resulting in improved employment opportunities. Culinary arts training will also be provided to up to 36 local residents with an end goal of employment or continued education.

The grant will allow the Respond Clean and Green Crew to employ neighborhood residents to continue efforts to improve and maintain vacant neighborhood lots and support several community initiatives including the Block Supporter Initiative, which beautifies home fronts and removes litter; Change The Message, providing positive billboard messages; and a Pop-Up Café, which will provide outdoor dining intended to engage residents in positively enhancing the neighborhood’s physical appearance. The New Jersey Tree Foundation will plant 25 trees and tend to already-planted trees, involving residents in the effort. Additional activities funded through the grant include structured, safe recreation in public parks to children ages 4-16 administered by trained YMCA staff; implementation of an adaptive reuse plan for Joseph Cooper House, a historic neighborhood structure; and working with 250 households through the Parent Leadership Training Academy to increase parental involvement in their children’s education.

Cooper’s Ferry Partnership will use the award to rehabilitate and sell four homes; assist homeowners in repairing or replacing basic home systems; implement infrastructure improvements in a large neighborhood park; and maintain three rain gardens which capture stormwater.

The Cooper Health System

Cooper Plaza Neighborhood, Camden 

Award Amount:

The Cooper Health System will rehabilitate three vacant homes for homeownership, two by Camden County Habitat for Humanity, which will also construct one home for homeownership, The third home will be constructed by St. Joseph’s Carpenter Society. The grant will also be used to assist homeowners with the repair/replacement of a basic home system, which includes the roof; heating/cooling; plumbing; or electric. Additionally, an existing house will be acquired and adaptively re-purposed as a multi-use community facility.

Camden Special Services District will make a continued effort to reduce litter, trash, graffiti, and debris in the neighborhood. Funding will also be used to build and outfit a facility to serve the health needs of students that attend the recently opened KIPP Cooper Norcross Academy.

The NRTC grant will provide funding to acquire and rehabilitate eight homes for homeownership and assist homeowners with the repair/replacement of basic home systems, which include the roof; heating/cooling; plumbing; or electric. Funds will also be used for the daily maintenance of the commercial corridor to improve cleanliness, maintain neighborhood assets, and improve neighborhood safety.

The Parkside Business & Community in Partnership will use grant funding for the rehabilitation and sale of five homes; predevelopment for the new construction of a mixed-use building; commercial façade upgrades for businesses on Haddon Avenue; creation of a new urban garden; and community activities including a neighborhood "clean team", clean-up events and outreach. Construction training will be provided for young adults in partnership with Camden County College.

Garden State Episcopal CDC will use funding to acquire and rehabilitate five homes to create eight affordable housing units for qualified home buyers and renters; provide nursing scholarships for up to 11 residents to become registered nurses or licensed practical nurses; provide youth-focused life skills and peer mediation training to build a positive peer network and learn conflict resolution skills; and youth programing including student mentoring, intergenerational activities and literacy improvement.

Award Amount:

Funds will be used for the acquisition and predevelopment of a building for medical and Head Start uses, and for equipment and support for Glasstown Center (built with proceeds from a prior NRTC grant). Additionally, Holly City Development Corp. will purchase bicycles and equipment for use by Millville community police officers to improve public safety and provide recreational activities and educational programs with creative enterprise themes.

Urban League of Essex County

Fairmount Neighborhood, Newark 

Award Amount:

The Urban League of Essex County will use funds to rehabilitate three single-family homes for homeownership; provide housing counseling for pre-purchase and financial literacy; train up to 25 residents in job skills development to prepare them for employment in the construction trades (masonry, carpentry, landscaping, and home improvement), followed by supervised work at a housing rehabilitation job site in the neighborhood. The grant will also be used to support Thriftworks, a training facility for retail merchandising of used clothing and housewares for local residents, and to work with existing, local microenterprises to become economically self-sufficient, and create self-employment opportunities.

The NRTC grant will be used to acquire and rehabilitate three residential properties to create four homeownership units in partnership with Community Asset Preservation Corp.; and create a housing resource center for education and individualized housing counseling. Additionally, the grant will be used to assist neighborhood landlords with property maintenance; and provide support for realtors in marketing the neighborhood. The funding will also support community programs including English as a Second Language classes, science-themed events, a neighborhood crime watch, and operating community gardens. Additionally, two local parks (Feaster Park, Pittman Park) will have concept and final design plans created to increase their utilization through future renovations, which will be done jointly with City of New Brunswick.

HANDS, Inc. will construct a nine-unit building for artists and creative entrepreneurs and support collaborating community organizations that provide arts-related programming to community members, artists, youth, and visitors in the Valley Arts District.

Grant funding will be used to create outdoor recreation and instructional space and purchase equipment to complete the Great Falls Education & Training Center.  NJ Community Corporation will also use funds to operate the Promise Neighborhood Initiative, a neighborhood help center serving local residents and volunteers working with residents to improve student achievement and strengthen families.
