This division provides constitutionally-mandated legal representations for individuals at voluntary and involuntary psychiatric commitment hearings. It currently represents the interests of indigent individuals in commitment and periodic review proceedings in 12 counties through regional field offices. Guardianship representation is provided for persons with developmental disabilities who are clients of the Division of Developmental Disabilities in the Department of Human Services. The division also provides attorneys for people facing civil commitment under the Sexually Violent Predators Act, in which sex offenders finishing their sentences in prison are evaluated to determine if they are to be civilly committed for further treatment.
