On Wednesday, May 17, 2006, approximately 230 representatives of civic, environmental, and industrial groups, as well as other interested parties, packed the War Memorial Ballroom to listen to the NJDEP's progress in developing plans for attainment of federal health and visibility standards thus far, and the NJDEP's anticipated future action.

The workshop was a part of the ongoing Reducing Air Pollution Together Initiative that began at a workshop on June 29, 2005 with the formation of the six air quality workgroups.

At the May 17th event, Commissioner Lisa P. Jackson and Assistant Commissioner Nancy Wittenberg gave the opening remarks. The NJDEP gave presentations on the State’s progress since the 2005 workshop; monitoring and modeling data on ozone and PM2.5; updates on anticipated federal and regional control measure efforts; reasonably available control technology (RACT) in New Jersey; control measures for other source categories in New Jersey; milestones that lie ahead; and next steps. The presentations from the workshop are now posted online.

The NJDEP anticipates forming a number of stakeholder teams to address implementation issues on measures ultimately selected. More information about the formation of these teams will be available on the web soon.

The public provided feedback on the workshop and on 60 white papers on various control options drafted by NJDEP and discussed at the workshop through an online survey and/or directly contacting the NJDEP by email or mail. Comments received on the white papers are now posted. If you have detailed comments on the white papers or would like to submit relevant data to the NJDEP, please email us at airworkshop@dep.state.nj.us.
