Responsible, Efficient and Resilient Communities

NJDEP Programs that Support Community Sustainability Programs

Brownfield Redevelopment

The Office of Brownfield Reuse (OBR) was created to serve as the focal point for the Department’s brownfield program. OBR is charged with coordinating remediation and reuse efforts at specific brownfield sites and piloting innovative approaches to expedite the revitalization proces.

Community Forestry

The New Jersey Community Forestry Program is a unique partnership between government, business, and volunteers caring for trees where people live, work, and play. Under the authority provided by the State legislature within the Community Forestry Assistance Act, the program encourages, promotes, and assists cities and towns in the establishment, retention, and enhancement of trees and forest resources. Trees in urban areas play an especially critical role.  For information on the benefits of trees in urban areas visit the American Forests site.

Green Acres Program

The Green Acres Program was created in 1961 to meet New Jersey's growing recreation and conservation needs.  Together with public and nonprofit partners, the Green Acres Program has protected open space and provided hundreds of outdoor recreational facilities in communities around the state. Conserving forest land and other open space plays a role in addressing carbon pollution by removing (i.e., sequestering) a portion of total greenhouse gas emissions.  Learn more here.

Green Infrastructure

Site provides information on Green Infrastructure (GI) methods and management practices that address stormwater runoff through soils, or reuse. There are a number of Green Infrastructure practices that can be implemented to achieve positive environmental results.  Including building Green Roofs which reduce the temperature of urban heat sinks and to increase stormwater storage capacity during rain events.

Idling / Diesel Reductions

Unnecessary vehicle idling contributes to health risks, pollution, and harms the environment.  Your town or city can be part of the solution.  The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection has designed a program “Idling is Everybody’s Business” which can be adapted by towns, businesses, or schools.  Visit this site for more information and resources.

NJ-GeoWeb

Mapping Tools: NJ-GeoWeb

Users of the NJ-GeoWeb application can locate areas of interest, view and interact with NJDEP's GIS data, and query related environmental information. NJ-GeoWeb presents users with a suite of customized profiles to choose from, where users can work within a more tailored application that includes specific datasets, tools, searches, and reports developed to address the interests of the general public, targeted groups of users, and the regulated community.

The profile was developed to support the development of sustainable, economic growth and renewable energy projects in, and off-shore, New Jersey. The profile contains resources to support the development of Solar Photo-Voltaic, Wind and Biomass renewable energy projects, and traditional redevelopment projects in various types of planning areas. This profile will be a valuable asset for property owners, business owners, government entities, and sustainable and renewable energy developers as it integrates New Jersey's environmental, economic, social and renewable energy data geospatially into one comprehensive tool.

Key data layers include: Electric Utility Territory Areas, Renewable Energy Potential Evaluation of Known Contaminated Sites, Parcels (Block & Lot), National Renewable Energy Laboratory Biomass and Solar data for New Jersey, Sustainable Jersey Certified Municipalities, NJ Metropolitan Transportation Planning Areas, Alternative Vehicle Fueling Stations, Colleges & Universities, Transit Villages, and Digital Elevation (10-meter), along with New Jersey environmental and economic data layers.

Waste Reduction and Recycling

The Department’s Recycling Unit promotes waste reduction, recycling, and recycled product procurement through grant programs and various other initiatives, including the New Jersey WasteWise Business Network, educational and promotional campaigns and the development and expansion of recycling end markets.  The unit also implements the Electronic Waste Management Act, which established a recycling system for the safe and environmentally sound management of televisions, computers and other electronic devices.

Every Drop Counts

Water Conservation

Did you know that each American uses 100 gallons of water on average every day? That is enough water to fill 1,600 bottles of drinking water! When considering summer outdoor water use, some New Jersey residents use in excess of 200 gallons of water per day!  This site provides information on water conservation technologies and tips on what consumers can do to reduce water use inside and outside the home.

Wildlife Action Plan

Wildlife Action Plan

The NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife (DFW) staff, with help from the general public, the state's conservation groups and other stakeholders, has developed a blueprint for the future conservation of our state's species of greatest conservation need. This blueprint is called the Wildlife Action Plan.  To learn more about New Jersey’s Endangered and Threatened Wildlife, including a list of species, click here.

Sustainable Jersey

DEP Support of the Sustainable Jersey Program

A variety of programs in DEP help to support the Sustainable Jersey program by providing technical assistance and guidance in the areas of land use, water conservation, natural resource management, waste reduction, reuse and recycling, energy, historic preservation, green infrastructure, climate adaptation and environmental education.
