Rain Barrel Challenge Water Festival 2016

The 2016 Barnegat Bay Blitz Rain Barrel Challenge Water Festival was held on Wednesday, June 8, at the Lakewood Middle School in Lakewood. The winning barrel was designed by 8th grade students in an afterschool program administered by science teachers Kelly Jankowski and Traci Hazley.

Twelve interactive workshops were offered six times for over 350 8th graders. The workshops were about 35 minutes in length and students and teachers rotated by class to attend six of the twelve workshop offerings. Topics focused on the Pinelands, fishing, water pollution, shellfish, aquatic insects, water and human health, wetlands protection, wildlife prevention and marine animals, to name but a few.

The festival was kicked-off by Marc Rogoff, Environmental Education Specialist for the NJ Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP), with his Wonderful World of Water assembly program.

Workshop instruction was provided by Department staff in Water Resources Management, the New Jersey Forest Fire Service and the Office of Communications.

The Department would like to thank and recognize all of the 2016 Water Festival partners that provided instruction for the Water Festival and helped to make it an educational, experiential and memorable program for the Lakewood Middle School eighth grade students and faculty.
