Community Collaborative Initiative (CCI)

Former Camden Laboratories

The site of the former Camden Laboratories deteriorated upon abandonment and became a hot-spot for illegal dumping, posing significant public health and safety risks to nearby residents. Since 2013, the Camden Collaborative Initiative, a voluntary partnership between several public agencies including the NJDEP, facilitated conversations across local, county and federal stakeholders and provided technical assistance to identify the illegal dumping responsible parties.

The NJDEP’s Office of Brownfield and Community Revitalization (OBCR) committed nearly $1.2 million in Hazardous Discharge Site Remediation Fund (HDSRF) grants to investigate the site. With the Camden Redevelopment Agency taking the lead on site work, additional environmental investigations and building demolition began in August 2018. This dilapidated, contaminated complex is now being transformed into an open, recreational space that will serve as an expansion of the adjacent Whitman Park.
