List for New Car Buyers

When you purchase a new vehicle, you can make a choice that can affect our air quality.
The “Clean Vehicle List” is provided to help you make a purchasing decision that can help reduce air pollution. As more people make informed decisions when selecting a new vehicle, all of us will breathe cleaner air.
This year’s listing for model year 2008 includes eleven new models of Advanced Technology Partial Zero Emission Vehicles (ATPZEVs), all hybrid-electric models with extremely low exhaust and evaporative emissions and improved fuel efficiency.
By selecting a vehicle on the “Clean Vehicle List”, New Jersey's consumers have the option of selecting a vehicle that is up to 90% cleaner than the average new 2004 model year vehicle, at little or no extra cost (source: California Air Resources Board ). In many cases, the higher initial cost will be more than offset through fuel savings over the life of the vehicle.
New Jersey’s air quality has improved greatly but continues to exceed the health-based standards for ground-level ozone and fine particulate matter. In New Jersey, emissions from cars and light-trucks account for about 30% of the total hydrocarbons and oxides of nitrogen emissions in the air that contribute to the formation of ground-level ozone or “smog” during the summer months.
Vehicles on the “Clean Car List” with a PZEV rating emit only two pounds of hydrocarbons over 100,000 miles of driving - equivalent to spilling a pint of gasoline (source: California Air Resources Board). Most of the vehicles on the list are conventional gasoline-fueled vehicles. With advanced technology, the auto manufacturers have been able to achieve ultra-low emissions and a more durable vehicle.
In addition to being extremely low emitting, these vehicles come with a 15-year, 150,000 miles (whichever occurs first) emission control warranty.
When shopping for a new car, if the vehicle model a new car buyer is interested in purchasing is on the list, the buyer simply has to ask the new car dealer if the vehicle is available in the PZEV or, in the case of hybrid electric vehicles, the ATPZEV certification, with the 15 year, 150,000 mile warranty.
New Jersey's Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Sales Tax Exemption
Legislation enacted in New Jersey in January 2004 provides a sales tax exemption for zero emission vehicles (ZEVs), which are battery-powered or fuel-cell powered vehicles certified pursuant to the California Air Resources Board zero emission standards for the model year.
