Acting Governor Richard J. Codey announced on April
20, 2005, New Jersey's Coast 2005 initiative, a comprehensive plan
to protect the integrity and economic viability of New Jersey's valuable
coastal resources. Under the initiative, the state will strengthen
standards and regulations that protect the coastal ecosystem, enhance
public access opportunities, expand protection for coastal wildlife
and wildlife habitats, and support our tourist, seafood and maritime
industries.
New Jersey's Coast 2005 follows the release of two federal studies
characterizing the declining state of America's coastal resources.
In April 2004, Commissioner Campbell circulated to the public a white
paper outlining proposals to better protect the environment and economy
of New Jersey's shore. Commissioner Campbell then convened public hearings
to gather input on the proposals. Joining the Commissioner at these
hearings were federal, state and local elected officials, environmental
and shore advocacy groups, representatives from shore-based businesses
and members of the general public. Following the hearings, the Commissioner
worked with fellow cabinet members to draft recommendations that have
been incorporated into New Jersey's Coast 2005.
