In
May 2002, the Bureau of Dam Safety & Flood
Control within the New Jersey Department of
Environmental Protection launched a Dam Safety
Awareness Program for Emergency Managers in
New Jersey. The purpose of the program was to
increase overall knowledge of emergency response
to dam failures in the state. Three seminars
were held throughout the state over a six-month
period. Topics included a case study of historic
dam failures, discussion regarding past emergency
responses to dam failures within New Jersey
and future emergency action planning for dams.
Members
of the Bureau of Dam Safety and Flood Control
staff created and conducted each of the seminars.
The seminars were open to state, county and
local agencies involved in emergency management
functions, including engineers, public works,
and county offices of emergency management.
