In October 2002, Compliance
and Enforcement conducted its first ever, week-long, multi-media
enforcement sweep in Camden. Working with county officials,
the New Jersey State Police, and the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA), the DEP mobilized more than 70
inspectors and conducted 764 investigations. Ninety eight
facilities were found in violation, 63 of which had major
violations. No violations were discovered at 498 facilities
and 168 facilities targeted were no longer in business.
Inspectors found non-compliance with laws addressing water
quality, solid and hazardous waste, air pollution, and
illegal land use activities. A quick return to compliance
was observed in many cases
Information gathered during the
initiative was entered into the department's database,
New Jersey Environmental Management System (NJEMS).
