New
Jersey's marinas supply essential commercial
and recreational services to the public
and are important to the State's economy.
In order to provide marina owners and
operators with information on environmental
practices aimed at reducing impacts
on the coastal environment, the New
Jersey Department of Environmental Protection
(DEP) conducted a two-year marina compliance
assistance project. This project was
part of the DEP's continuing effort
to proactively help New Jersey businesses
interpret environmental regulations,
and to assist them in reducing any possible
impacts on our natural resources.
 |
|
Funding
for the marina compliance assistance
project was awarded to the DEP's
Office of Local Environmental Management
(OLEM) by the federal Environmental
Protection Agency. Through the combined
efforts of eight
participating New Jersey counties and
OLEM, 123 marinas received scheduled
on-site visits to assist them in complying
with a wide-range of regulatory issues.
Since a variety of normal operating
activities at a marina have the potential
to cause pollution, a multi-media
Compliance Assistance Inspection Form
was utilized during visits. |
A copy of the inspection report, including
findings and recommendations was issued
to the marina operator after the visit.
If necessary, follow-up visits were made
at the marina to provide further assistance,
and to verify compliance with identified
issues following a short (60-90 day) grace
period.
A
marina owner or operator may wish to contact
NJDEP/Land
Use Regulation Program to determine
if a Waterfront Development permit and/or
Tidelands License is required. Please
note that these requirements were not
part of this compliance assistance project
and are not included on the Compliance
Assistance Inspection Form. |
