New Firearms Hunter Education Course FAQs

In 2014 the separate Shotgun and Rifle/Muzzleloader courses conducted by the NJ Hunter Education Program were combined into the new FIREARMS course. The Rifle/Muzzleloader course will no longer be offered.

During the 2015 Hunter Education season, those students with a current Firearms Hunting License wishing to hunt with the muzzleloader or rifle may register for any Firearms Course. Students should complete all firearms sections of the Hunter Education Workbook.

Students also have the option of using the alternate, fee-based Completion of this online course and presentation of the printed voucher at the field session/exam location can be substituted for completing the workbook. Students need to bring to class either a resident firearm hunting license or proof of shotgun hunter education to bypass the field walk and portions of the range. Students will still be required to pass a written test.

The following FAQs concern changes in the program since 2014:

Q. What basic Hunter Education courses are being offered this year?
A. There are only two hunter education courses: Firearms and Bow. The Shotgun Hunter Education Course and the Rifle/Muzzleloader Course have been merged in one Firearms Course. The Archery Course remains unchanged. New hunters need to take one or both of these courses.

Q. I already hunt with a Firearm or All-around License. Do I need to take the new Firearms Course to obtain a NJ Rifle Permit in order to hunt with a rifle or muzzleloader?
A. If a person has previously taken the Shotgun Course, or has a Firearm or All-Around License, but has not taken the Rifle/Muzzleloader Hunter Education Course, they need to complete the new Firearms Course. Those who bring their license or shotgun hunter education card to the course may bypass the field walk and portions of the range.

Q. What topics does this new Firearms Course cover?
A. The new Firearms Course covers shotgun, modern rifle, muzzleloader and air gun.

Q. What type firearm will I need to shoot for the live-fire portion of the class?
A. The live-fire portion of the course will be completed using a shotgun. Students can bring their own cased shotgun or use one that is provided by the state. Do not bring ammunition to the class; the state will provide all ammunition.

Q. Is my old hunter education workbook still valid?
A. Yes. Old hunter education workbooks are still valid. Firearms Course students must complete all Shotgun and all Rifle/Muzzleloader sections. A new version of the workbook is available on the Division's website at (pdf, 93kb).
