Monday, October 29
The 2nd week of fall stocking will occur on Wednesday, October 31 and Thursday, November 1. The stocking of these trout was delayed until this week because of unseasonably warm temperatures which led to concerns that the large fish, reared in 52°F water at the Pequest Trout Hatchery, would have difficulty adjusting to a large, sudden increase in temperature when stocked.
The water temperatures in the central and south Jersey lakes and ponds scheduled for stocking were checked again today. These temperatures, now in the low 60's, are suitable for trout stocking. Fortunately, the hatchery was able to hold these 3,290 trout several additional weeks without compromising the production cycle. At last, anglers will have the chance to fish for these big trout, which are now a bit bigger due to their extended stay at the hatchery.
Wednesday, October 24
The second week of fall trout stocking, which was re-scheduled for October 24 and 25, has been postponed. Due to record-breaking warm weather in October, prevailing water temperatures in the lakes and ponds scheduled for fall trout stocking remain marginal for trout. In anticipation of cooler weather over the next week, stocking has been tentatively re-scheduled for next Wednesday and Thursday, October 31 and November 1. Division staff will continue to monitor water temperatures and an update regarding the stocking schedule will be provided on Monday, October 29, by 4 p.m. on the Division's Website and Trout Hotline (609-633-6765).
Thursday, October 18
Unseasonably warm temperatures experienced this fall have begun to cool, resulting in water temperatures more suitable for trout stocking. As a result, the 16 lakes originally scheduled for fall trout stocking during the week of October 8 have been rescheduled for October 24 and 25. The Division will continue to monitor conditions in these trout stocked waters to ensure they are suitable for stocking. Please check this site periodically for the most up-to-date information.
Friday, October 5
Due to the continued stretch of warm weather resulting in elevated water temperatures, the second week of fall trout stocking scheduled for the week of October 8 has been postponed. Recent water temperature readings at lakes scheduled to be stocked have ranged into the mid to upper seventies.
The second week of stocking consists of 16 lakes located in Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cumberland, Gloucester, Mercer, Middlesex, and Salem counties. The stockings were originally scheduled for October 9 and 10. Conditions will be re-evaluated at the end of next week and stocking will be re-scheduled as soon as conditions permit. The fish can be retained at the Pequest Trout Hatchery for up to two weeks.
MONDAY, OCTOBER 1
Week 1 (October 1 – 5)
Major departures from the normal Week 1 stocking routine are as follows:
Black River – Flow is so low that the trout allocated for the Black River will be stocked
further downstream in the Lamington River, Somerset County, from the Rt. 523 bridge at Burnt Mills downstream to its confluence with the North Branch of the Raritan River.
S/Br. Raritan River – Due to low water conditions no stocking will occur upstream of the Rt. 517 bridge in Long Valley.
