For the second year, fall trout stocking will begin during the second week of October, rather than the first week. In recent years fall stocking was often postponed due to weather conditions that resulted in high water temperatures and/or low stream flows. Moving the start of fall stocking to the second week of October takes advantage of cooler temperatures, which benefit trout and minimizes the potential for last minute stocking schedule changes that impact anglers.

Fall stocking commences Tuesday, October 9th. Approximately 20,000 two-year old brook and rainbow trout, averaging 14-16 inches, are stocked in 17 streams and 15 ponds and lakes over a two-week period. Streams are stocked during the first week, and ponds and lakes are stocked during the second week. In addition to these trout, up to 1,000 broodstock trout (three-year old rainbow trout, averaging 18-22 inches) are also stocked. Broodstock trout are mixed in with each truckload of fish. All fish were raised at the division's Pequest Trout Hatchery.

The stocking boundaries for streams are the same as in the spring (see the current Freshwater Digest for information). There are no closed dates during the fall stocking period. Updates to the fall stocking program will be posted as necessary.
