Hunter Education Field Session and Exam Information

Prior to 2014 the NJ Hunter Education Program offered separate Shotgun and Rifle/Muzzleloader courses. These are now combined in the new FIREARMS course.

New Firearms Course FAQs

See Schedule and Register NOW!

The final component of the Hunter Education Home Study Course is the field session and written exam. Field sessions and exams are offered at one or more locations throughout New Jersey every weekend March through November (excluding July when only weekday classes are held, and holiday weekends). Sessions are also held on several weekdays for added convenience. Sessions are held rain or shine.

Trapping classes, when scheduled, are posted on the Trapping Information page.

All students must complete the home study materials prior to attending a field session and bring their completed workbook or HunterCourse.com voucher to the class. Students are encouraged to complete the practice exam(s) for the discipline(s) they register for prior to attending a field session.

All students under 18 are required to have a signed Consent Form with them at the field session/exam. Students 16 and under must be accompanied by an adult age 21 or older.

Consent Form (pdf, 12kb)

Following is more specific information for each discipline:

BOW COURSE

Students must bring a bow and arrows with field points to the class. Students must be able to shoot 3 out of 5 arrows into the vital zone of a 3-D deer target (approximately 10-inch diameter) between 15 and 20 yards away with their own bow to pass this course. (Crossbow must be cocked by the student; prior arrangements can be made for those with a disabling condition.) Students are encouraged to practice and qualify with the archery equipment they plan to hunt with, either conventional bow, compound bow or crossbow.

FIREARMS COURSE

The live fire portion of the course consists of students taking 3-5 shots at stationary and moving clay birds; there is no accuracy requirement but students must demonstrate safe and proper handling of the shotgun. Students may bring their own shotgun (except 10 ga.) but should not bring any ammunition which will be provided at no charge. Loaner shotguns (20 ga.) are available.

Upon completing the home materials students should review the exam/field session schedule (March-November) for the one that best fits their schedule.

Students register at www.nj.wildlifelicense.com. For assistance call 856-629-0552 or 877-2-HUNT-NJ, or e-mail njhuntered@dep.nj.gov.

NOTE: Students are required to arrive at the session location by the scheduled start time with their completed workbook or voucher. Anyone arriving after the start time or without a completed workbook or voucher will not be admitted.

Field sessions/exams are available for both disciplines - Firearms and Archery - at each location unless otherwise specified. Sessions are held rain or shine. Participants should come prepared for the weather and to be outdoors for at least 4 hours. The length of a session depends on the number of disciplines being completed - students can take both if prepared to do so.

Materials are available at specified vendors or through the mail and at Division offices.
