This is a fee-based, OPTIONAL component of the NJ Hunter Education Program.
Completing this online component (verified by the voucher) fulfills the requirement of bringing a completed workbook to a field session/exam location. Attending a field session and successfully passing the live-fire and written exam is required to complete the Hunter Education Program.

Since 1972 the NJ DEP Division of Fish and Wildlife has offered free hunter education courses to the public. The courses include the the basic disciplines of Firearms and Archery. New Jersey hunter education has evolved into a home-study program where students complete a workbook using print, DVD/video and/or online resources for background information. A required field session and written exam are offered at locations throughout the state from March through November to complete the course.

Since October, 2009, participants have had another option for learning the material and being excused from completing the workbook (but not the field session or written exam). This option is the private Interactive Hunter Education Course. This online course allows students to complete the hunter safety coursework online before attending the required field course and written exam.

The coursework is presented in a narrative fashion with more than 350 original illustrations and 35 interactive exercises, followed by review questions and discussion points.

Students can register and take the online course for free; to be excused from completing the workbook a course completion voucher must be printed and brought to the field session/exam. There is a $25 fee (payable to to print the voucher.

Interested students are reminded that the standard student class materials, available at many license agents and online, remain the foundation for the NJ course and are offered FREE. This new interactive course simply provides another option for learning, particularly for students who may benefit from a more interactive learning style. There is no charge for the field session, live-fire testing and written exam.
