The Fish and Game Council recently authorized the Director of the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife to grant a three week extension of the Permit Shotgun Season through February 17, 2001 in Deer Management Zone 11 which encompasses a portion of Hunterdon County. The shotgun permit season is currently underway in Zone 11 and was scheduled to conclude on January 27, 2001.
"The extension was granted in coordination with the approval of a Community Based Deer Management Program for Agricultural Areas in Delaware Township that was submitted by the Hunterdon County Board of Agriculture," said Division Director Bob McDowell. "Extending the shotgun permit season will allow hunters to harvest and utilize deer while at the same time contribute to the overall management objective of reducing deer-related agricultural damage in this zone."
All other current regulations apply, including the bag limits, method of take, license/permit requirements, tagging and registration at deer check stations. Zone 11 shotgun permit hunters should note that only check stations in and within ten miles of Zone 11 will be open to check deer after January 27 through February 17, 2001.
A limited number of Permit Shotgun Season permits remain available for Zone 11, however, interested sportsmen should note that there is very little public land open to hunting in Zone 11 and that they should obtain permission to hunt on private land before purchasing a permit.
