2006 Deer Season Updates and Estimates

January 3, 2007

Please note that actual harvest numbers for all the 2006-07 deer seasons will be available on this site in March 2007.

PERMIT SHOTGUN EXTENSION

Please note that the proposed extension of the one-day Permit Shotgun season for Deer Management Zones 1, 3, 21, 23, 24, 43, 45, and 46 (Regulation Set 2) will NOT take place. The proposal to extend the season in case of prohibitively inclement weather was rendered unnecessary, as mild temperatures and intermittent rain did not prevent hunters from taking to the field on December 13, 2006.

2006 FALL BOW ESTIMATE

Preliminary statewide estimates for the 2006 Fall Bow season show a 2.5% increase in harvest over the 2005 Fall Bow season, with approximately 356 more deer taken in 2006. The preliminary estimate for 2006 is 14,396 deer, compared to the 2005 Fall Bow harvest of 14,040 deer. The 2006 Fall Bow harvest estimate is the highest for this season since 1995.

2006 SIX-DAY FIREARM ESTIMATE

Preliminary statewide harvest estimates for the 2006 Six-day Firearm season indicate a 6.5% decrease in antlered animals over the 2005 season, with approximately 649 less bucks taken in 2006 than in 2005. The preliminary estimate is 9,352 deer, compared to 10,001 bucks in 2005. The 2006 Six-day Firearm estimate is an 18.5% increase over the 2004 Six-day Firearm harvest of 7,895 bucks.
