Clarification Regarding Legal Muzzleloading Rifles and Gunpowder

November 20, 2007

The NJ DEP Division of Fish and Wildlife reminds hunters that the only legal muzzleloading rifles for hunting in New Jersey are flintlock and percussion cap rifles using black powder or black powder equivalents such as pyrodex or triple seven. Legal percussion rifles include in-line versions which use shotgun type primers as the percussion cap.

The recently introduced electronic ignition muzzleloading rifle is not legal for hunting in New Jersey. Additionally, some muzzleloader manufacturers advertise their rifles are capable of using modern smokeless gunpowder. However, the use of smokeless gunpowder in muzzleloading rifles is not legal in New Jersey. Hunters are advised to seek guidance from the Division by calling 609-292-6685 before purchasing any new technology firearm for use in New Jersey hunting seasons.
