Vessel Deployment Slated for the Shark River Reef Site

November 24, 2010

The deployment of a 58-foot trawler, originally planned November 23, 2010, has been rescheduled to December 7, 2010. The site is on the Shark River Reef site located 14.8 miles east of Shark River Inlet as part of the Division's Artificial Reef Program. The vessel is being sunk as a memorial reef for Darren Cardinal, a member of the Hudson River Fishing Association which contributed toward the vessel preparation and deployment. The Fisherman's Conservation Association also contributed to this effort.

The target location for the deployment on the reef is: 40 06.500   73 41.300. Commercial fishers who have gear in this area must move it or risk having it destroyed.

Once the vessel is sunk it will soon become a home for 150 species of fish and marine life, a fishing ground for anglers and an underwater attraction for scuba divers. The vessel will continue to serve the fishing industry for at least another 50 years.

The target date for deployment of December 7 is subject to weather and sea conditions. For further information regarding the deployment of the vessel contact Hugh Carberry at 609-748-2022.
