The New Jersey Division of Fish, Game and Wildlife today announced the availability of approximately 10,000 pheasants for public sale. The birds are being sold in an effort to make the Division's Pheasant Program operate self-sufficiently, as costs currently exceed revenue generated through the sale of pheasant stamps.

"With the Division's fiscal solvency in jeopardy, we cannot continue to subsidize the Pheasant and Quail Program," said Division Director Bob McDowell. "This is a necessary cost-saving effort that will reduce program expenses by about $80,000 and allow the revenue generated by Pheasant and Quail Stamp sales to actually pay for the program."

Male and female birds are available from the Rockport Game Farm in Warren County. The minimum order per individual is 50 birds. A minimum of 10 pheasants may be picked up at one time.

Prices for cocks and hens picked up between November 1 and 30 are $8.50 and $7.50, respectively. Costs between December 1 and January 2 are $8.75 and $8.

Order forms are available from the Division's Trenton, Rockport, Pequest, and Northern, Central and Southern region offices. (Discontinued as of 1999)

Orders will be accepted through October 15. Payment is required upon receipt of birds and must be in the form of a check or money order. Pick-up hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
