The Department of Environmental Protection's Division of Fish, Game and Wildlife initiated a special Youth Turkey Hunting Program for young hunters participating in the 1999 New Jersey Spring Wild Turkey Hunting Season, April 26 - May 22. The program will enable all youth turkey hunting permit applicants, aged 15 and younger, to receive their first choice permit request in the first lottery for the spring gobbler season.

"The intent of this program is to encourage parents or guardians to "Take a Kid Hunting," said Division Director Bob McDowell. "A quality turkey hunting experience with a parent or guardian will be long remembered and do much toward fostering the future of the sport in New Jersey."

Permits awarded to youth hunters will be added to the permit quota. Additionally, if the parent or guardian is selected for the same Turkey Hunting Area, but for a different time period (week A through E) than the youngster, he or she may take the youth hunting with them during their time period and the youth's permit will still be valid. When hunting with a parent or guardian during a time period not designated on the youth's permit, the youngster must be under the direct supervision of the adult. Supervision is defined as both the youth permittee and parent/guardian set up together at the same location, hunting as a unit and not hunting independently of each other for different birds.

The season bag limit for youths is one turkey. For more information on the program, call 609-292-9173.
