The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection's Division of Fish, Game and Wildlife informs hunters that 1998 Turkey Hunting Permit Application and Season Information supplements will be available at division offices and license agents statewide during the last week of January. The application period is Feb. 1-22.
This year, hunters may apply for three turkey permits through the mail-in lottery using the SAME application. Three random lotteries will be conducted. The first two lotteries will be for the Spring Turkey Season. The third lottery will be for the Fall Season in zones 1 through 5, 8 through 11 and zone 20 ONLY. Hunters should note that only one application per licensed individual will be accepted.
As a result of these lotteries, fewer permits will be available for over-the-counter sale. Individuals should note that it is extremely important to apply through the mail-in lottery if they would like a 1998 turkey permit.
Due to a limited number of permits available for the Fall Season, over-the-counter sales are not anticipated and a sale date is not scheduled at this time. However, if extra permits are available, a sale date will be announced in the future.
The cost of each permit is $16.25, which includes a $2 non-refundable application fee. Hunters should make sure that applications are filled out correctly, as incorrect applications will be returned.
Farmers may apply for both the farmer turkey permit and the regular turkey permit. The farmer permit application period is also Feb. 1-22. These application forms are currently available from county agricultural agents and division offices statewide.
Specific information regarding season dates, hunting areas and permit application procedures can be found in the supplement. For more information concerning turkey permits, call the 24-hour computerized Permit Hotline at 609-292-9192.
