Student Summer Programs at Sedge Island Natural Resource Education Center

The NJDEP Division of Fish and Wildlife and its partners will be offering teenage students three exciting summer programs based at the Sedge Island Natural Resource Education Center, located within NJ's first Marine Conservation Zone. The facility is located just off Island Beach State Park in Barnegat Bay and provides a beautiful location for these unique, educational, fun and exciting experiences for teenage students.

Sedge Island Fishing Experience — June 26-29, 2014
The NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife, in partnership with Conserve Wildlife Foundation of NJ, is offering a 4-day 3-night program open to students going into grades 8 and 9 in the fall of 2014. Students will spend the first three days fishing the area while learning about the surrounding ecosystem. On the final night a parent or guardian will join the group and spend the last night learning from the students, and the following day fishing with them.

Cost is $475* and includes all meals, lodging, instruction and equipment.

Application period closed April 21.


Sedge Island Field and Research Experience — July 10-16, 2014
The NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife, in partnership with the Marine Academy of Technology and Environmental Science (MATES), is offering a residential research experience for students entering grades 10 and 11 in fall 2014. During this program students will be taught field research skills that will lead them to conduct team research projects on Barnegat Bay with a culmination of a sharing session the last day of the program. The Lighthouse Center for Natural Resource Education in Waretown and the Sedge Island Natural Resource Education Center will be the settings where research will take place.

Cost is $770* and includes all meals, lodging, instruction and equipment.

Application period closed April 18.


Sedge Island Field Experience — July 28-31, 2014
The NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife, in partnership with Conserve Wildlife Foundation of NJ, is offering a 4-day 3-night program for students going into grades 7, 8 and 9 in the fall of 2014. Students will spend their days immersed in the salt marshes of Barnegat Bay while exploring the ecosystem by kayak, living a conservationist lifestyle, and learning first hand about research from biologists.

Cost is $425* and includes all meals, lodging, instruction and equipment.

Application period closed March 10.

* Please note scholarships are available for all workshops.
