This data represents the 2002 Integrated Report final assessment results for aquatic life and recreation designated uses as well as fish advisories and eutrophication assessments of lakes. The assessments are based on data from the NJDEP Bureau of Freshwater Fisheries, local and county health departments, and NJDEP Clean Lakes Program.
This data spatially represents the aquatic life and recreation designated uses, fish advisories, and eutrophic status of lakes. Lakes are assessed as one waterbody and are not subdivided. Each waterbody is identified by a unique name and assigned one assessment result. If several sites are sampled in a lake with individual evaluation results, the assessment result for the lake is the aggregation of all of the sampled site results. The methods used for the final results are explained in the NJDEP document, "Integrated Water Quality Monitoring and Assessment Methods." Aquatic Life Designated Use Assessment - Section 5.1 Recreational Designated Use Assessment - Section 5.2 Lake Aesthetic Quality Assessment- Section 5.3 Spatial Extent Assessment Methods - Section 6.2
There are approximately 3,278 lakes, reservoirs and ponds over 2 acres size in New Jersey, but of these, only about 60 are natural. The remainder are constructed impoundments. There are 380 public lakes (24,000 acres) and 64 reservoirs. Thus far, 480 lake bathing beaches at 319 lakes have been identified; some lakes have multiple beaches. NJDEP Lakes with Name Attributes for the State of New Jersey. Lake polygons based on NJDEP 1995 Land Use/Cover for New Jersey Update Version 1.3.
Lake polygons and names are based on NJDEP Lakes with Name Attributes for the State of New Jersey. Assessment results were imported from NJDEP Water Assessment Team's data files, and included verification check with approximately 90% of the entries.
Merged lake polygons if hydrology indicated they were connected.
Blank entries for assessment results are unassessed parameters

Lake polygons used as base coverage.
Used NJDEP Lakes with Name Attributes for the State of New Jersey as the base coverage. The following edits were completed to improve and simplify the lakes: a) deleted all lakes smaller than 2 acres; b) using the 1995 orthoquads, added any missing lakes or deleted lakes that were obviously detention basins, cranberry bogs, man-made structure holding water (ie settling tank at STP), or wide river without a dam. Checked approximately 60% of the state; c) Lakes that were known to be hydraulically connected were merged together to create one lake (polygon). Additional lake names were manually matched using recreational lakes that were GPS'd, dam names, and atlases. Each lake was assigned a unique name by adding the watershed management area (WMA) number to the lake name. Lakes with unknown names were assigned the name "Lake" followed by a index number and the WMA number. The assessment results were imported from the Water Assessment Team's data files and joined with the coverage using the Lake Name as the common attribute. Intersected the coverage with watershed management area and HUC 11 coverages to identify lake location by watershed management area, HUC 11, HUC 8, and region.
