ADVISORY:
NJDEP is in the process of updating this metadata file to comply with the FGDC Content Standards for Digital Geospatial Metadata (CSDGM). In order to make this data available immediately to the public, NJDEP is releasing it to the New Jersey Geographic Metadata Clearinghouse with the existing metadata. The updated metadata will be made available after the review and verification of the content of the metadata has been completed.
The shore protection structures project involved the identification, interpretation, and the plotting of all shoreline protection structures located along the New Jersey coastline and within the New Jersey Coastal Areas Facilities Review Act (CAFRA) zone. The structure that were identified include; Jetties, Groins, Revetments, Sea Walls, Breakwater. Jetties and groins are protective structures (usually built from rock, wood, or concrete) which extend outward from the shoreline. They look alike and provide similar function. The difference between the two is that jetties are located at inlets, while groins are located along beaches. Sea walls are similar to bulkheads in function, but unlike bulkheads, they are located along the high beach line adjacent to the ocean, protecting property from ocean forces. Revetments are sea walls which are surrounded on either side by rock or earth fill. A breakwater structure is a protective barrier placed in the water out in front of a harbor (Sandy Hook quad).
Purpose: This dataset was created to provide a graphical representation of the various shoreline structures of the Atlantic Coast and Inland Bays of NJ.

A mylar manuscript was made for each FEMA map panel. The high velocity V line and road intersections were delineated on the mylar. Tics ids were identified at these intersections on the manuscript and orthophoto. The V line is defined as "Areas of 100 year coastal flood with velocity (wave action)." The manuscript mylars were scanned, vectorized and edited. The unique tics on the orthophoto were digitized and added to the transformation file for each panel. Each panel was then transformed and appended and checked to the photoquads.

Process Step:
Process Description:
Diapositive aerial photographs (1986 JSS series color infrared aerial photographs at a scale of 1:58,000) were placed over a light table and viewed through SIS 95 Bausch and Lomb {SYMBOL 226 \f "Symbol"} zoom stereoscopes for inspection. 1986 orthophoto quadrangle were used as base maps. The 1986 shoreline delineations (taken from the NJDEPE GIS database) were plotted on mylar and placed over the base maps and set on light tables. As each structure was identified through the aerial photographs, it was delineated in pencil (Pentel{SYMBOL 226 \f "Symbol"} 0.3 mm) onto the corresponding overlay.
