On June 7, 2002, the Green Acres Program added 230 acres of privately-owned land to New Jersey's system of open space. The Brewer property comprises approximately 200 acres of woodlands- including Atlantic white cedar trees - surrounding a 30 acre pond on West Creek in Maurice River Township, Cumberland County. The pond, known as Cedar Lake or Hands Mill Pond, was created to serve the "Hands Mill," a long gone landmark. The first mill was built before 1750. First used as a sawmill, the mill was later used for milling grist - it was reported to have had the largest and best wooden undershot wheel in South Jersey. The property achieved a degree of notoriety as the scene of a 1935 US Coast Guard raid on what had been described as the largest still in Cumberland County, which resulted in the shooting death of one of the "bootleggers."
In more recent years, the property was a seasonal trailer campground. The property is still wooded, with cedar trees around the pond and the remaining land comprised of red maple and pine-oak forest. Plants of interest on the property include pitcher plants, sundews, and other pinelands native plants. The property is adjacent to the Thomas lands acquired by Green Acres on April 22, 2002. This new acquisition will become part of the Belleplain State Forest and will be managed by NJDEP Division of Parks & Forestry.
Thanks to Mr. George Brewer for sharing photos and historical information on the property! |
