On October 31, 2001, the State of New Jersey acquired 279 acres of open space in West Amwell Township. The former Mantell Property comprises over 2 miles of frontage on the Alexauken Creek, forested hills and high open meadows that make up the watershed for the Alexauken Creek, a trout maintenance stream.

Preservation of this property protects critical habitat for migrating birds and wildlife in the foothills of the Sourland Mountains. This property provides extensive trail opportunities and is a cornerstone to a large regional open space initiative. An additional 300 acres of adjoining land has been preserved by the Green Acres Program, Hunterdon County and the Hunterdon Land Trust Alliance. The Division of Fish and Wildlife will manage the property in cooperation with West Amwell Township.
