The Division of Land Use Regulation
&
The Natural Resources Conservation Service

Originally established by Congress in 1935 as the Soil Conservation Service (SCS), NRCS (Natural Resources Conservation Service), and part of the US Department of Agriculture, has expanded to become a conservation leader for all natural resources, ensuring private lands are conserved, restored, and more resilient to environmental challenges, like climate change.  Seventy percent of the land in the United States is privately owned, making stewardship by private landowners absolutely critical to the health of our Nation's environment.  NRCS's natural resources conservation programs help people reduce soil erosion, enhance water supplies, improve water quality, increase wildlife habitat, and reduce damages caused by floods and other natural disasters.  Public benefits include enhanced natural resources that help sustain agricultural productivity and environmental quality while supporting continued economic development, recreation, and scenic beauty.

The Division of Land Use Regulation coordinates with NRCS as part of its review of specific permit applications submitted pursuant to the Freshwater Wetlands Protection Act and Flood Hazard Area Control Act, such as habitat creation and enhancement activities and streambank stabilization.  NRCS also assists the Department with technical guidance regarding soils, and provides technical training to staff.

They also have an online "Web Soil Survey" service, available for free to the public.

Please visit their website for more information on their program.
