PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

The bureau assists in ensuring the safety and integrity of dams in the state and, thereby, protecting the people and property from the consequences of dam failures.

MONETARY ASSISTANCE PROVIDED:

A low interest loan program has been established for the restoration, reconstruction or removal of dams.  The loan is a 20-year loan at 2% interest.  Loans are available for publicly or privately owned dams.  Private owners must have a municipal co-borrower.

To be eligible, owners must have an engineer develop a conceptual design sufficient enough to establish an approximate cost estimate to complete the project.  Owners may apply for loans during open application periods as established by the bureau.  More information is available on the Dam Safety web page.

PERMITTING RESPONSIBILITIES:

The bureau reviews plans and specifications for the construction of new dams or for the alternation, repair, or removal of existing dams and must grant approval before the owner can proceed with construction.
