PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
The Recreational Trails Program (RTP) is a federally-funded grant program that provides financial assistance to federal, state, county and municipal governments, as well as non-profit organizations. The program implements the New Jersey Trails Plan which was adopted in 1982, revised in 1996 and is currently being updated. This update will be a strategic policy plan that will serve as a blueprint for establishing and maintaining a comprehensive system of trails in the state. Program staff serves as staff liaison to the New Jersey Trails Council (an advisory body to the department and Department of Transportation) to solicit input on the Trails Plan and recommendations for the RTP grants, and as National Trails Day Coordinator by soliciting park agencies and trail organizations for National Trails Day events, compiling a listing of those events and distributing the information statewide.
MONETARY ASSISTANCE PROVIDED:
The program is a federally-funded program devoted solely to the development and restoration of trails and trail facilities. Funding is eligible to governmental and non-profit agency landowners. Funding source is the Federal Highway Administration. Maximum grant award is $25,000 for non-motorized projects. Larger awards are available for motorized recreational projects (ATV, off-highway motorcycles, etc.). Applicants must match at least 20% of the total cost of the project. Applications are sent out in September, with a mid-December deadline. An application may be downloaded from the above mentioned web site.
PERMITTING RESPONSIBILITIES:
If a project requires a permit as part of a trail project, the applicant must provide proof of an approved permit prior to construction.
