DEP Parks and Historic Sites Offer Weekend Activities

(04/71) TRENTON -- The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) offers various events at state parks, historic sites, and recreation areas. Some of the events planned for this weekend include:

  • Whitesbog Blueberry Festival, Brendan T. Byrne State Forest
The 21st Annual Whitesbog Blueberry Festival offers an array of Bluegrass and Pineland's folk music, an abundance of great food, tours, Pineland's art and photography, unique country crafts, an operating antique engine display, a tractor parade, and of course BLUEBERRIES! There will be plenty of activities for kids as well: a blueberry pie eating contest, games, face paintings, contests and more.

The BLUEBERRY was named the State Fruit of New Jersey on January 12, 2004.

The Festival will be held on June 26, with the rain date as June 27. Activities run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There is a $7.00 parking fee.

  • Annual Reenactment of the Battle of Monmouth, Monmouth Battlefield State Park
On June 26 and 27 witness a reenactment of the largest land artillery battle of the American Revolution, as period reenactors recreate the 1778 Battle of Monmouth. They'll set the scenes that led to the court-martial of Major General Charles Lee, the bravery of Mary "Molly Pitcher" Hays and General George Washington's actions confirming his role as an inspirational leader.

See enlisted men clean their weapons or idle away their time gambling, and watch the women of the army cook, mend, and wash. At the parade ground, watch soldiers drill or artillerists fire their cannons.

The reenactment runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is a requested $8 per car donation.

  • Canoe and Kayak Demo Day, Spruce Run Recreation Area
Sponsored by Eastern Mountain Sports, Canoe and Kayak Demo Day will offer visitors a chance to test-run a number of canoes and kayaks. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on June 26, ($10 per car parking fee). There will be a licensed instructor on hand to go over the basics of canoeing and kayaking, and a discussion on kayak safety. Car-top carriers, life flotation devices, and paddles will also be available at the event.

  • Ice Cream Social and Free Concert, Hancock House State Historic Site
Cool off and relax with ice cream and a concert at the Hancock House State Historical Site on Sunday, June 27th from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. There is no fee for this event; donations are welcome.

  • Sign the Declaration of Independence, Allaire State Park
Follow in the footsteps of our forefathers and join in the signing of the Declaration of Independence. What better way to get ready for the 4th of July?

Go to the Visitor Center and Museum of Allaire State Park from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on June 27th and relive a part of history.

There is a $5 parking fee.
