DEP RECOGNIZES ENVIRONMENTAL EXCELLENCE

Award Applications Available

(04/98) TRENTON -- In an effort to recognize outstanding environmental performance, programs and projects in the state, Commissioner Bradley M. Campbell today announced that the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) will accept applications for its Environmental Excellence Awards Program until September 17.

"I encourage the public to honor New Jersey's environmental leaders by participating in the 2004 Environmental Excellence Awards nomination process," said Commissioner Campbell. "This program provides a great opportunity to recognize those whose work improves environmental quality in our state."

2004 marks the fifth year of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection's Environmental Excellence Awards Program, which is co-sponsored by the New Jersey Corporation for Advanced Technology (NJCAT) and the New Jersey State League of Municipalities.

Winners will be judged on the basis of the documented environmental benefits, innovation, and long-term impact of their work. DEP will accept nominations in nine categories: Clean Air, Clean and Plentiful Water, Safe and Healthy Communities, Open Space Protection and Preservation, Healthy Ecosystems, Innovative Technology, Environmental Stewardship, Environmental Leadership and Education. DEP added the education category this year to highlight the work of students and teachers.

Individuals, organizations and businesses may submit nominations. Applicants may nominate themselves or their company/organization as well as another company, individual or organization. Third party nominations must be accompanied by a written authorization from the nominated party agreeing to consideration for the award.

Applicants and projects to be considered must be located in New Jersey and agree to share information regarding their project or program through a written case study.

The 2004 Environmental Excellence Awards will be presented during the New Jersey State League of Municipalities Conference on November 16 in Atlantic City.

Applications are available online at http://www.state.nj.us/dep/special/award/.
