DEP OPENS SWIMMING AREAS MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND AT
NEW JERSEY’S STATE PARKS, FORESTS AND RECREATION AREAS

(07/30) TRENTON - As New Jerseyans prepare to celebrate the start of summer, Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Lisa P. Jackson today invited residents and visitors to dive into one of 14 swimming areas in the state's parks, forests and other recreation sites.

During Memorial Day weekend, all swimming areas will be open from Saturday through Monday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. After the holiday weekend, most of New Jersey's swimming areas will operate on a seven-day schedule, with the following exceptions:

The ocean swimming area at Island Beach State Park will operate weekends only through June 17, and then operate seven days a week beginning June 18.

Atsion Recreation Area in Wharton State Forest, Bass River State Forest, Belleplain State Forest, and Stokes State Forest swimming areas are open weekends only until the end of June.

The DEP is looking for applicants to fill lifeguard positions at many swimming areas. Testing, training and certification are provided free of charge.
