JOHN GIORDANO NAMED DEP ASSISTANT COMMISSIONER FOR
COMPLIANCE AND ENFORCEMENT

(13/P69) TRENTON – John Giordano, a former deputy secretary at the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, has been appointed as the Department of Environmental Protection’s Assistant Commissioner for Compliance and Enforcement, Commissioner Bob Martin announced today.

“John brings a great deal of energy to this important position on the DEP’s senior management team,” Commissioner Martin said. “His experience, in particular his work with the U.S. Department of Justice handling environmental and natural resource matters, will prove invaluable as we work to protect the state’s air, water and natural resources.”

“I am eager to begin working closely with our regulated communities, our citizens, and our local officials,” said Giordano, who most recently served as Deputy Secretary for Administration at the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. “New Jersey has an excellent track record in environmental compliance and enforcement. I look forward to continuing this tradition.”

As Deputy Secretary, Giordano served as the agency’s chief administrative and fiscal officer, responsible for ensuring that the department’s resources were optimally deployed in support of its mission. This included maintaining oversight of approximately 2300 full-time and seasonal personnel and a budget of $300 million. In this capacity, he also provided direction on a broad range of issues, including those related to energy and environmental regulation, compliance, and risk management.

He also has served as a federal prosecutor with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia, and as Counselor to the Assistant Attorney General for the Environment and Natural Resources Division at the U.S. Department of Justice. Before joining the Justice Department,
Giordano served as a Senior Advisor and Staff Director at the U.S. Department of Energy.

Giordano replaces Wolf Skacel, who retired after 29 years with the DEP’s Compliance and Enforcement Program. Skacel started with the DEP as a hazardous waste inspector and retires this week after eight years as assistant commissioner.

“Wolf has served the DEP faithfully and well over a long career. He has always been the consummate professional, and someone who cared deeply about his state,” said Commissioner Martin. “I wish him all the best in his retirement.”
